Marsh Responds to Earthquake in Chile

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Chile's coastal regions on Saturday, resulting in widespread flooding, property damage, and loss of life. The quake, the fifth largest ever recorded, also caused more than 150 aftershocks.

At the time, a high alert for tsunamis was issued for Pacific coastal areas, including those in Hawaii, Japan, and Russia. The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later lifted all tsunami advisories.

Many companies operating in Chile and areas prone to natural disasters such as tsunami may now be dealing with the affect of these events on their people, finances, operations, or reputation. As a result, business continuity management, crisis management, supply chain management, and claims management plans may have been implemented or are being evaluated during these early stages of recovery.

CAT-i Bulletins

While dealing with the effects of the earthquake and ongoing aftershocks, it is vital that organizations have the most up-to-date information available on natural disaster and recovery management strategies. CAT-i bulletins, provided by Marsh and Guy Carpenter, contain such real-time research, forecasts, and advisory resources:

  • CAT-i bulletin (March 5, 2010) provides updated damage assessments and loss figures, particularly given the increasing number of powerful aftershocks.
  • CAT-i bulletin (March 2, 2010) updates the initial impact assessment and estimates economic and insured losses.
  • CAT-i bulletin (March 1, 2010) provides an initial impact assessment of the Chilean earthquake and resulting tsunami.

In addition, though a significant tsunami did not materialize, Marsh Risk Consulting's Natural Hazards Practice has prepared a CAT Topics paper focused on historical tsunami events, tsunami science, and key steps to take to mitigate and respond to such a threat.
