Behavioral Risk Improvement for a Large Food Distributor

A longtime Marsh client, a leading Food Distribution and Retail Company, operates in a highly competitive industry known for razor-thin margins. Consequently, management is always looking for ways to reduce non-payroll expenses, of which the largest component of their total cost of risk is workers compensation.

As they have a relatively mature risk management program, we felt they were a candidate for Behavioral Risk Improvement (BRI), a new approach to safety and accident prevention being offered by Marsh Risk Consulting Strategies consultants. The BRI program involves training local client management on a set of specific behavior modifications practices through a six-week implementation process.

The Marsh team, consisting of the client executive, the risk control consultant and a BRI specialist, approached the client's Director of Risk Management, the Safety manager and the Vice President of Logistics. The BRI process was discussed as a logical next step in the clients overall risk management program, aimed at changing behaviors which resulted in workers compensation claims. After several discussions and reviews of the clients current program, the client decided to engage Marsh to implement more than 10 BRI programs at their distribution centers.

Although recently implemented, the BRI process is showing good early results of reduced frequency of workers compensation claims. Both Marsh and the client expect the return on investment to exceed 5:1 through reduced workers compensation costs.
