Pick, Wipe, and Sweep it Up

The most frequent incidents that lead to injury for our guests are slips, trips or falls. Employee injuries from these occurrences are second only to back strains. The message, which should be crystal clear to us all, is to encourage our team members to Pick-Up, Wipe-Up, Sweep-Up whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Some areas of a hotel give way to a much higher probability for slip, trip and fall hazards. Water, slush, salt crystals, etc. will collect at hotel entryways exposing our guests and service employees to injury potential. Our kitchen operations present many opportunities for spills, items setting about in pathways, and general lack of order. Complimentary breakfast and/or buffet services seem to encourage food and beverage spills that lie in wait for some foot to discover them. Exits from the swimming pool to the hotel public areas often are wet from bathers who didn't take time to dry off. Service corridors confront us with numerous items and opportunities to slip on, trip or fall over.

Employees must be made aware of these hazards during initial job training efforts. They should be constantly reminded during safety briefings to remedy the hazard by picking-up, wiping-up and sweeping-up. After all, their positive actions in this regard could prevent their own injury from happening.
